Entertaining Preschoolers on a Budget: 5 Quick and Easy Outings for You and the Kids

It’s snowing or maybe raining and you need to entertain your preschooler but it is too cold or wet to go outside. As a parent or care provider of a preschooler it can be hard to keep the young ones entertained and stay on a budget during this time of year when outdoor play is not always possible.

Here are 5 mom-tested and kid-approved ways to keep the young ones entertained.

Michael’s or Other Local Craft Store Most Michael’s have Mommy & Me drop-ins for under $5.00. Even if they don’t you can take a trip to your local craft store and let your preschooler pick out the supplies for a craft that is all their own.

Parent & Child Playtime – Local Community Centers Call your local recreation or community center to get a list of sessions that are hosted to go and let your young one burn off some energy. Most centers will utilize the gymnasium to let preschoolers have some free play time for a couple of dollars one or two times per week.

Bowling Alley Call your local bowling alley to find out what the best time is to bring in the kids. Most alleys will put up bumpers to prevent the preschoolers from getting frustrated by gutter balls.

Library Always a great option and free too. Whether you go during a designated story time your library has set-up or just to take your children to pick out their own books to bring home.

Fire Hall The Fire Hall is always a big hit with young children; getting to see fire trucks up close and talk to real Fire Fighters. The added benefit to this is the children being able to see the real fire gear a Fire Fighter wears in person because it means they are less likely to be scared in the event of a real fire. Just be prepared to have to leave if an emergency call comes in!

Be creative when deciding to take your preschooler out, it doesn’t have to cost a lot to be fun. Let your little one be the guide for a day and see where they take you!

Fire Engine Birthday Party – At The Fire Station!

I don’t have children myself (yet) but I’ve seen the drama’s that many of my friends go through when planning a birthday party… and paying for it. A lot of my friends decide that they will do a special birthday party only for the ’special’ ages such as first birthday and fifth birtday.

What got me thinking about birthday parties with a toy fire truck theme was my friend Nicolette who’s son Max was turning five and he was literally obsessed with being a fireman. The funny thing about it, is that his dad is a policeman and Max is quite determined he’s going to be a fireman!

So his mum wanted to make sure his fifth was a special birthday that he could share with some of his friends from kindergarten and it would be a memorable birthday before he started school. Being from a small-ish town, Nicolette decided to check with the local fire station to see if they would consider letting her host Max’s birthday at the firestation, and they agreed! It’s worth a call don’t you think? If you’re from a big city then chances are they won’t even entertain your request, but even if you can’t host the party at the station you could see if they’re happy for you to bring the children for a visit or a demonstration of some of the equipment.

(Nicolette has promised to send me some photo’s of the day, so I’ll post them up here as soon as the busy mum gets round to sending them to me!)

First up, Nicolette sent out invitations to the party. She did these up on the computer and printed them out in colour. But there are many great invitations you can buy online and I highly recommend Amazon because you can get everything you need for the party.

Above is an example of the invitations you can get, just click on the picture and it will take you straight through to Amazon (in a new page, so you can come back here when you’re ready) and a huge array of fire engine birthday party themed games, decorations, toys and accessories.
