Creating a Baby Boys Nursery

Congratulations! You’re going to have a baby boy! As soon as you get the news, it’s normal to start brainstorming about how you will decorate your infant son’s bedroom or nursery. Where do you even begin? There are a few good starting points that can make the process easy.

If the bedroom or nursery has recently been freshly painted and you don’t want to paint again, designing a boy’s bedroom around the existing paint color is an easy way to start. Identify the main colors in the room and select one or two coordinating or deliberately contrasting colors. In a room painted light blue, for instance, you could choose navy and royal blue as coordinating colors, or you could pick green and white for contrast. With the chosen color scheme in mind, look at baby crib bedding sets that would accentuate these colors.

On the other hand, if the room needs new paint, or if the room is already a neutral color like white, your options are wide open. Then it’s fun to start out shopping for baby crib bedding sets you really love as your starting point. Select one or two main sets to outfit the crib, and then design your babys bedroom around the colors, patterns, or themes prevalent in those linens.

Starting out with a particular theme in mind, such as cars and trucks, sailboats, puppies, or fire trucks is also a great way to begin. Use your preferred theme to select baby crib bedding sets. Then paint the walls or woodwork to coordinate with the colors in the bedding and theme. You can even add a wallpaper border, stencils, or cutouts on the walls to match the theme you choose.

Finally, paint, stain, or purchase furnishings and accessories to match the colors, style, and theme selected. Get creative and add color and contrast with lampshades, rugs, and curtains. Select framed prints or knickknacks to give the room some added pizazz.

You can use traditional little boy themes, like trains, baseball, and cowboys since it’s easy to find baby crib bedding sets with sports prints or mottos and traditional themes. Masculine color selections such as blue, green, and brown are also good choices, as are bold primary colors like red, blue, and yellow. Stripes, polka dots, geographic shapes, and animal prints (like zebra, giraffe, and tiger stripes) make fantastic, more modern options.

For parents who are partial to a more modern exciting theme, take a walk on the wild side by painting the room a medium shade of vibrant blue with white woodwork and trim. Deck out the crib with giraffe or zebra print baby crib bedding sets. Then accessorize with giant green jungle, like foliage stenciled on the walls, stuffed monkeys or elephants and other jungle animals, and curtains made from fabric that looks like big puffy clouds in a blue sky.

You can incorporate a deep green rug on the floor, whimsical framed prints from storybooks that focus on jungle animals, like Curious George on the walls, and wild animal print pillows piled on a window seat or in a comfortable chair for nursing or cuddling before bedtime as vibrant accents.

7 Baby Boy Gift Ideas

woodYou received the good news that a friend recently gave birth to a baby boy. You are as excited as she is that you headed straight to the mall with the intention of buying a gift for the child. Now what exactly should you get?

1. Diaper Cakes

This was seen in an episode of “Sex and the City.” The four unmarried were invited to the baby shower of their friend and Charlotte bought these as her present. It is beautifully packaged and it looks more like a cake than diapers piled one atop another.

2. Animal Blankie

Baby manufacturers came up with blankets that have animal designs, meaning they can be folded in such a way that they become an animal. Animal blankies come in frog, duck and penguin form.

3. Picture Frames

This may simple but it actually has sentimental value. The mother and the baby boy can put their favorite photograph here and display it in their living room for all their guests to see.

4. Gift Packages

If you want to get your money’s worth, then this is the perfect gift to give. Any mom will be so excited to get this one. Baby boy packages usually contain bibs, bottles, baby rattles and other stuff for the baby boy to enjoy.

5. Bath Set

To make bath time intimate for both mother and baby boy, a bath set will do the trick. By giving them this set that has loofah, bubble maker, shampoo and more, the bath set is something the mother and the baby boy will be using over and over again.

6. Growth Chart

This is the perfect way you document the growth of their baby boy. Giving mother and the baby boy a growth chart allows them to keep track of the boy’s height as he grows up.

7. Toy Trucks

He may be just a baby boy but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be enjoying the toy trucks you put in his crib. There are stuffed toy versions of dump trucks, tow trucks and fire trucks in most toy stores.

Give Me Wood and I Will Show You a Toy

woodHow many toys are made of other materials that you can’t find made from wood? Not many, other than the electronic ones. You see, natural wooden toys have been around for more years than any other toy. That’s FACT. Archaeologists have found natural wooden toys when digging for other artifacts, which date back to before Christ. That certainly is more than can be said of plastics and man made materials. Wood in fact will still be around when plastics and the like have ceased to exist because of the scarcity of oil.

Look at the skill of the wooden toy maker, it is remarkable and to look at a child’s rocking horse when it has been hand carved and the final touches added is a joy to see. I am sure if you were to ask the wooden toy maker to make a toy of your choice he would not have a problem carving one to perfection, whatever it may be. Yes the moulding of plastic has given it an edge in the past, but nowadays with new technologies, the wood carver can give highly polished and intricate finishes to wood never seen before. There are lorries, diggers, spinning tops as well as aeroplanes and pirate ships to mention but a few, in a vast range of natural wooden toys, most of which have been hand carved.

We know if we were all to look in our homes that we would find lots of plastic toys. But where are these toys kept? Are they out on display in pride of place? Or are they pushed to the back of a cupboard or wardrobe, probably never to be played with again? Now if you would take a look again, is there any wooden toys? My guess would be, yes, at least two and probably one of these is on display, or left out. It is out because natural wooden toys are attractive and pleasing on the eye, they can be a centre piece in the lounge, or if small enough sat on a mantelpiece over the fire.

Do we love natural wooden toys because the wooden toy maker puts so much love and effort into his masterpiece, which is then passed on through the wood, or is it because it was once living and giving us life through its leaves giving us oxygen. It may be lots of differing things, one thing is for certain though, wood will be used for making toys for generations to come.

Tips For Choosing Education Toys For Babies

invite postcardEverything a baby encounters in the first months of life can be described as education toys. Babies enter the world with no experience and no exposure to the new world around them. Each time one of their five senses is aroused they are learning something about their environment. Choosing an education toy for a baby is almost as simple as exposing them to any new experience in life.

Education toys should focus on the senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch or taste. This is the way babies connect with their world in the early days of their life. They have no communication skills yet, other than crying, so everything they come in contact with expands their world.

For new babies cloth books and stuffed animals will engage their sense of touch. These items require no interaction but still allow the baby to learn about his world. Mobiles and spinning toys mounted above their cribs will provide a focal point for their eyes as they explore their world, looking for broader horizons.

As babies grow their senses expand as well. Balls and other soft toys without sharp edges give them a chance to begin developing eye and hand coordination as they grasp, hold, push, throw or shake toys within their reach. In these early stages of life education is not a matter of facts and figures, it is more about discovering what everything looks like and how it feels.

Books of nursery rhymes and children’s stories can be read to babies even before there is any discernible understanding on their part. Hearing the voice of a parent or other caring adult will build a sense of security for the baby. At the point where words begin to take on meaning the baby will already be ahead of the game as he was hearing words and ideas from the earliest time of his life.

Babies approaching the first year of life become much more interactive. They will start to take part in playing with others. Balls, blocks and other toys can be handed back and forth. Simple games geared to the level of a baby will train him to react to his environment. Placing large puzzle pieces in a puzzle board will develop coordination skills.

The world is one big educational experience for babies in the first year of life. Education toys for babies do not need to be expensive or elaborate.

The Three Brands of Fire Truck Toddler Beds

The fire truck toddler bed model has always been a popular choice among little boys. It spurs their imagination and provides a reason to leave the crib. So, if you have a boy who is making a transition to a bed, you can’t really go wrong if you settle for a fire truck toddler bed with its bright red color.

In the market today, there are three popular brands selling fire truck toddler beds. Each one is unique in its design and constructed with different materials. Depending on your budget and design preference, you should be able to pick one that suits your needs.

Step2 Fire Engine Toddler Bed

The first fire engine toddler bed model is by Step2. This model is very popular among parents and at Amazon, this item enjoys a 4.5-star rating. This is because most parents find the bed easy to assemble and sturdy. It is constructed using durable plastics and has a siren night light with an auto shut-off feature.

The Step2 fire engine toddler bed has a dashboard with molded-in details like a steering wheel and radio. To complete the look, stickers are provided to decorate the bed, making it less plain. Unlike other toddler beds, this model has a friendly look with big eyes in place of lamps at the front end. If you are not too fond of beds with clear-cut corners, then this bed should meet your needs because the edges are rounded.

Just Kids Stuff Fire Truck Toddler Bed

This model is a little expensive but it is solidly constructed using laminated and imported Baltic birch wood. If you are thinking of using the bed for more than one kid, the Just Kids Stuff fire truck toddler bed should be a safe bet.

However, this bed may not be as popular not only because it is relatively more expensive but the design is also not as attractive. It is very squarish in style, making it look very much like a box. But if quality is what you are after, then this model may be able to fulfill your needs.

Kidkraft Fire Truck Toddler Bed

Of the three, the Kidkraft fire truck toddler bed is the least expensive. Constructed of medium density fiberboard (MDF) materials, it has a storage compartment at the front end. The guard rails are designed as ladders, giving a fire truck look to the bed.

One advantage of this Kidkraft model is that you can buy matching bedroom furniture together with the bed to decorate your toddler’s room. For instance, you can have a clothes pole, step stool that doubles as a toy chest or little table and chairs to make the room just like a small fire station. If your aim is some fun and play, then the Kidkraft brand gives you that option.

Cost Of The Beds

If you are on a budget and can’t afford to spend too much, then you should look at the Kidkraft fire truck toddler bed. The average retail price for this model is about $130 but you can get it for less at times from some online stores. Comparatively, the other two models would cost you about $100 more.

Whether you should spend $100 more and consider the other two toddler bed models would depend on your preference over the type of materials used for the bed’s construction and of course, design attractiveness. Each of the beds has its own pros and cons and you will have to weigh them in accordance with your preference and situation when deciding on which to buy.

Entertaining Preschoolers on a Budget: 5 Quick and Easy Outings for You and the Kids

It’s snowing or maybe raining and you need to entertain your preschooler but it is too cold or wet to go outside. As a parent or care provider of a preschooler it can be hard to keep the young ones entertained and stay on a budget during this time of year when outdoor play is not always possible.

Here are 5 mom-tested and kid-approved ways to keep the young ones entertained.

Michael’s or Other Local Craft Store Most Michael’s have Mommy & Me drop-ins for under $5.00. Even if they don’t you can take a trip to your local craft store and let your preschooler pick out the supplies for a craft that is all their own.

Parent & Child Playtime – Local Community Centers Call your local recreation or community center to get a list of sessions that are hosted to go and let your young one burn off some energy. Most centers will utilize the gymnasium to let preschoolers have some free play time for a couple of dollars one or two times per week.

Bowling Alley Call your local bowling alley to find out what the best time is to bring in the kids. Most alleys will put up bumpers to prevent the preschoolers from getting frustrated by gutter balls.

Library Always a great option and free too. Whether you go during a designated story time your library has set-up or just to take your children to pick out their own books to bring home.

Fire Hall The Fire Hall is always a big hit with young children; getting to see fire trucks up close and talk to real Fire Fighters. The added benefit to this is the children being able to see the real fire gear a Fire Fighter wears in person because it means they are less likely to be scared in the event of a real fire. Just be prepared to have to leave if an emergency call comes in!

Be creative when deciding to take your preschooler out, it doesn’t have to cost a lot to be fun. Let your little one be the guide for a day and see where they take you!

Pedal Cars For Kids and Collectors

big red toy fire truckChildren love pedal cars even though they do not understand the nostalgic significance of them. To kids, these toys are more of an imaginary ride into the lives of adults. Collectors, on the other hand, enjoy finding pedal cars that remind them of days gone by. Quality products are important for both kids and adults.

Kids will enjoy the colorful designs and paint jobs of these cars. They will really get into pretending if they are given cars that are based on real work cars. Fire engine, police car, and racing car style pedal cars are great to fuel the imagination. Just having a car in their favorite color will please any child. One important thing to remember is that only cars painted with lead free paint are acceptable for use by children.

What is more, if you buy good ones, they can be driven easily. Look for cars with steering that really works and pedals that can be adjusted. Solid steel construction means that your child will not break them down just by riding around in them. Notice the weight limits on any that you buy. 70 pounds is a common weight limit, which covers most children who would be interested in driving.

Collectors look at these cars differently. They look for authentic detailing such as rounded fenders or old fashioned ladders and horns for fire truck pedal cars. Rubber tires and chrome wheels give them a finished look that will go great in any den or display room. Adults who love these cars go for models that show a connection to the past with the shiny newness of the present day. It is like bringing the past to life.

Pedal cars make great gifts for people of all ages. Adults will display them with pride. Children will ride them into a fantasy world of excitement and joy. You cannot go wrong when you purchase good quality pedal cars for your loved ones with an interest in automobiles.

Collect Diecast Model Cars

die castAre you an enthusiastic lover of cars? If you are, you probably collect diecast model cars. Whether it’s a hot rod, a cruiser, a roadster, or a semi, a diecast model will help you re-live the pleasures of the open road.

High quality diecast models reflect the style, beauty, and details of the original cars and trucks. With details such as wheels with individual wire spokes, seats with working springs, automotive quality paint, doors that open, and revolving metal link chains, you might be ready to take your model for a spin around the block! A 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible, for example, has adjustable front wheels, and its doors, trunk, and hood all open up. Imagine cruising down the highway in this beauty!

Golden Legends

For collectors of the golden oldies, nothing beats a spectacular model layered in 24 karat gold. The original 1910 Tin Lizzie 1:32 scale model has real spoke wheels, a front door that opens, a detailed engine, and a center-hinged hood that opens. John Brown Headlamps and side-mount and rear carriage lanterns almost glow in the dazzling gold.

Fast forward to the 1930 Packard Speedster to see how cars changed in 20 years. A 1:32 scale model of the classic has opening front doors, a detailed engine, and an opening bi-fold hood. How they pack such detail into six little inches in a mystery!

Ford Mustangs

Mustangs are among the most popular diecast models. Ford introduced the original Pony Car in 1964. Mustang models trace the development of this legendary car through six generations–from the Fastback to the Boss to the Cobra to the SVO to the Saleen. With a prominent rear spoiler, a 1:18 scale model 2000 Mustang SVT Cobra has a detailed interior, steerable wheels, and a perfectly modeled engine. What color is it? Red, of course!

Chevrolet Corvette

Chevrolet started manufacturing the Corvette in 1953. Diecast models capture the development of this ultimate sports car from the originals through the Sting Rays to today’s models. With its prostar rims and removable hood, the 1957 Corvette gives you a sense of what this car will become. You’ll want to take off in the 1:24 scale model 2007 Corvette Indy 500 Pace Car with steerable front wheels, doors and hood that open, rubber tires, and detailed engine compartment.

Fire Trucks

Almost everyone has a childhood memory of a toy fire truck. Diecast fire truck models starting with the 1914 Ford Model T Fire Engine have extraordinary detail. With unwinding fire hoses, real wood ladders, and hoods that open, and detailed engines, these free wheeling models are fun for everyone. And don’t forget the police diecast cars that accompany the fire trucks!

Entertainment Cars

Some cars are memorable for their roles in movie classics. Remember the 1940 Cadillac Series 75 from the Godfather, or the 1966 Batmobile Roadster? The Batcycle diecast model is a Batman fan’s delight.

Diecast Collectors

Every collector has a different reason for his or her obsession. Whether you appreciate the fine designs and engineering, want to remember years gone by, or have fantasies of the trips you might still take, high quality diecast models are a pleasure to own.

Children’s Book Review – Fire Trucks to the Rescue!

Every little boy wants to grow up and become a fire fighter, interestingly enough, this is so common that children’s book marketers work very hard to produce fire engine and fire fighter books. These books sell almost as well as the little toy fire engines at the stores. If you have little boys then you know this, and therefore you want to fuel their fire and desire early on to dream and think about their future. So, why not buy a children’s book that will do just that?

What if I told you that I have just the perfect book for you in mind. In fact, I have this book sitting right in front of me and I cannot believe how well it was received. As a parent you know what I mean, sometimes they like books sometimes they don’t; luckily, this one they did. The name of the book is:

“Fire Engines to the Rescue” A Little Golden Book from the little golden book series, by Janet Campbell and illustrated by Courtney Studios, with appreciation to the Joplin Missouri Fire Department. Published by Western Publishing Company, Inc. 1991. ISBN: 0-307-00306-X.

The story takes you through a normal day in the life of a fire department and then all of a sudden a huge fire breaks out. The fire fighters rush to the scene of a multi-story structure fire and start rescuing people, including a family on one of the upper stories. They save the day and then return to the station for dinner, waiting for the next call that could happen at any time.
